Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts Provides Paint and Finish Stripping for Doors Painted in the 1800s
Wooden furniture is built to last which is why there are still many pieces in use that were produced hundreds of years ago. Many people with old pieces of furniture preserve them to keep their antique status, only having restoration work done to restore its original character. Others may enjoy their old furniture but are less concerned about the antique status. In these cases, people may have old pieces of furniture stripped and refinished to create a new look that better matches their home or their personal taste.
At Furniture Medic by MasterCare Experts, we recently had a customer bring us a set of doors that were originally painted in the 1800s. The customer wanted us to strip the original finish and paint and get the doors down to the wood. As an expert in furniture stripping, we were confident in our ability to strip the doors down without causing them any damage. While we do offer furniture refinishing services that include staining and color matching, the customer chose to have us strip the doors down so they could repaint and refinish them.
Stripping Down Doors from the 1800s
When the customer brought these doors to us, they wanted the original finish and paint from the 1800s to be stripped away. The customer was no longer happy with the paint color of the doors and wanted them stripped down to apply a new paint job and finish. Our craftsmen meticulously stripped the paint and finish from each door so that they were ready for a new paint job and stain. We used water-based furniture stripping products that effectively removed the finish and paint from the doors. These products allowed us to effectively strip the doors by hand without the need to soak them in a large tank. After removing the paint and finish, we thoroughly rinsed the pieces.
As you can see in the after pictures, the doors were stripped bare to the wood and did not endure any damage in the process. The customer was then able to take their doors to apply the paint and finish of their choice.

The following are the top reasons to consider stripping and refinishing your wood furniture instead of replacing it:

- The furniture is an heirloom you don’t want to get rid of
- The furniture has sentimental value
- Your home has been redecorated and the furniture needs a new color to match
We hope that the customer does an excellent job repainting and refinishing the old wood doors and that they are satisfied with the outcome.
